General Description: Azolla pinnata, commonly known as feathered mosquito fern, is a floating aquatic plant belonging to the Azollaceae family. It is found across tropical-temperate regions in Asia, Africa, Madagascar, and Australia, thriving in stagnant nutrient-rich waters such as ponds, lakes, and rice paddies. This variable species has been traditionally used as green manure in Asian rice paddy fields.

Aquarium Suitability: Azolla pinnata can be successfully kept in aquariums as a floating plant, provided it receives ample light and the water has high nutrient levels. It is categorized as an easy-to-care-for plant, making it suitable for aquarists of all skill levels. (see table)

Demands and Hardiness: Azolla pinnata is a fast-growing plant that thrives in temperatures ranging from 20-30°C and tolerates a broad temperature range of 10-35°C. It requires medium to high light levels and can adapt to pH levels between 5 to 8. The plant prefers a nitrate concentration of 10-50mg/l and a phosphate level of 0.1-3mg/l. (see table)

Aquascaping & Usage: In aquariums, Azolla pinnata can serve as an attractive addition to the water surface, creating a natural and lush appearance. Its floating nature adds a dynamic element to aquascapes and provides cover for aquatic inhabitants.

Propagation: Propagation of Azolla pinnata can be achieved through fragmentation, splitting, or cutting off daughter plants. This method allows for the easy spread and maintenance of the plant within the aquarium environment.

Habitat and Distribution: Feathered mosquito fern, Azolla pinnata, is prevalent in various tropical-temperate regions, with a presence in Asia, Africa, Madagascar, and Australia. It is commonly found in nutrient-rich, still waters like ponds, lakes, and rice paddies across its native habitat.
