General Description

Native to Central and South America, Cabomba furcata, also known as Red Cabomba, is a fine-leaved reddish stem plant that forms literal carpets in slow-flowing waters with a slightly acidic pH. Its shield-shaped floating leaves are lineal in appearance, and it produces red-purple flowers. This species is also referred to by synonyms such as C. piauhyensis and C. warmingii.

Aquarium Suitability

Red Cabomba is considered difficult to cultivate due to its specific demands for light and nutrients. It requires 0.8 watts per liter of light for stable growth, along with micronutrients, nitrate, and phosphate. A nutrient-rich substrate like ADA Aquasoil can enhance its growth significantly. For optimal health, carbon dioxide fertilization is essential.

Demands and Hardiness

C. furcata demands sufficient light, nutrients, and CO2 supplementation for healthy growth. It is highly susceptible to nutrient deficiencies, which can manifest as darker leaves, reduced growth, and long internodes. Careful nitrate limitation may enhance its coloration. The plant thrives in temperatures between 24-30°C and prefers a pH range of 5-6.8.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquariums, Red Cabomba serves as a beautiful accent plant for the middle or background, complementing fine-leaved or bright green species. It contrasts strikingly against driftwood and adds vibrant coloration. However, it cannot be cultivated above the waterline in tanks.

Propagation

Propagation of C. furcata is most successful through terminal cuttings, where new shoots form from the uppermost node. The plant is a fast grower under optimal conditions and requires frequent trimming to maintain its shape and health.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is found naturally in countries such as Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Brazil, and Venezuela, thriving in freshwater habitats. It grows abundantly in regions with suitable environmental conditions, forming dense carpets and showcasing its red-purple flowers.
