Aquarium Suitability
Aquarium Compatible: Yes
Difficulty: Easy
Plant Growth: Slow
Plant Type: Stem
Water Conditions: The plant thrives in medium-high light with a temperature range of 22-26°C and a pH of 6-7.5. Carbon dioxide levels should be maintained between 10-40mg/l, with nitrate levels at 10-50mg/l and phosphate levels at 0.1-3mg/l.
Aquascaping & Usage
Lobelia cardinalis is suitable for midground and foreground placement, especially in Dutch-style aquaria. It is commonly used in Leiden tanks to create 'plant streets' due to its manageable height and unique leaf structure, making it an excellent choice for formal layouts.
Propagation
Propagation of Lobelia cardinalis is typically done through cuttings. Shoot tips can be trimmed and replanted to propagate the plant, allowing for the growth of lateral shoots.
Habitat and Distribution
The Cardinal flower is native to the eastern and central regions of the United States. It can be found growing alongside rivulets, ponds, and road ditches in moist environments. In addition to the United States, Lobelia cardinalis is also distributed in Canada, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, and Colombia.
