General Description

Soft hornwort, known scientifically as Ceratophyllum submersum, is a lesser-known aquatic plant compared to Ceratophyllum demersum. This plant is distributed worldwide and typically thrives in nutrient-rich stagnant waters, with some habitats intermittently drying out. Easily distinguished from C. demersum, the leaves of C. submersum feature multiple forks with 6-8 threadlike tips, in contrast to the 3-4 tips of C. demersum. Additionally, the leaves of C. submersum are finer, softer, and more flexible, while the stems are consistently light green.

Aquarium Suitability

Ceratophyllum submersum is suitable for aquariums, being occasionally available commercially. It is considered very easy to care for, making it an excellent choice for beginners. This plant can be left floating or planted into the substrate, requiring no special supplements but benefiting from a CO2 boost for faster growth. Regular trimming is necessary due to its rapid growth rate, making it particularly suitable for larger tanks (see table for water parameter ranges).

Aquascaping & Usage

With its fine-leaved appearance, Ceratophyllum submersum adds a delicate touch to aquascapes. It can be used as a background plant, in the midground, or even left to float at the water surface. This plant serves as a spawning site and provides cover for fish fry, making it an ideal addition to breeding tanks.

Propagation

Ceratophyllum submersum propagates readily through fragmentation and cuttings. This ease of propagation contributes to its popularity among aquarists looking to expand their plant population.

Habitat and Distribution

Naturally found in Central Europe and other warm locations globally, Ceratophyllum submersum prefers warmer environments compared to C. demersum. Its adaptability to varying water conditions and ability to tolerate colder temperatures make it a versatile plant for both outdoor and indoor aquatic settings.
