General Description
Eleocharis acicularis, commonly known as dwarf hairgrass or spikerush, is a globally distributed aquatic plant found on the edges of ponds and in shallow waters, particularly in Central Europe. Its submersed form features thin, hairlike, upright leaves of a medium green color, growing to about 10-20 cm in length. Another similar species, Eleocharis pusilla (often marketed as "E. parvula"), stays smaller (around 5 cm high) with light green leaves under similar conditions.
Aquarium Suitability
This plant is highly suitable for aquariums, frequently available in the commercial market. It serves well in midground and foreground placements, especially in nano tanks, where it forms a grass-like lawn. Hardy and adaptable, Eleocharis acicularis is known to thrive in varied water conditions (see table).
Demands and Hardiness
Eleocharis acicularis is categorized as an easy plant to maintain with medium growth. It flourishes in temperatures ranging from 20 to 25°C and exhibits tolerance to colder temperatures (4-27°C). The plant requires medium to high light levels along with appropriate levels of carbon dioxide, iron, nitrates, phosphates, and potassium.
Aquascaping & Usage
Ideal for creating a lush carpet effect, Eleocharis acicularis is a popular choice for aquascaping, especially as a foreground or ground cover plant in nano tanks. Its dense growth pattern adds a natural and visually appealing element to aquarium landscapes.
Propagation
Propagation of Eleocharis acicularis is achieved through runners, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants. This method allows for the easy expansion of the plant within the aquarium, promoting a fuller and more vibrant aquascape.
Habitat and Distribution
Found globally, Eleocharis acicularis predominantly thrives on the peripheries of water bodies and in shallow waters. Its presence in Central Europe, along with its widespread distribution, highlights its adaptability to various habitats and climates.
