General Description

Eleocharis fluctuans, previously known as Egleria fluctuans, is an elegant aquatic stem plant that floats on the water's surface. It features reddish-brown stems with delicate olive green leaves growing in tufts on the stem nodes, resembling Najas but belonging to the sedge family (Cyperaceae). Originating from the South American tropics, specifically Brazil and Venezuela, this grass-like plant is uncommon in the aquarium hobby due to its infrequent importation.

Aquarium Suitability

With a rarity in commercial availability, E. fluctuans is mostly obtained from other hobbyists. It demands intensive care akin to Tonina fluviatilis, Syngonanthus, and Eriocaulon species. It thrives in high light conditions, a continuous nutrient and CO2 supply, soft and acidic water with low carbonate hardness (3 or below), and a pH of 6.5 or lower. Unsuitable water parameters can cause the plant to blacken and cease growth.

Demands and Hardiness

The setup for E. fluctuans requires meticulous attention to water parameters and lighting. It is crucial to maintain a pH level below 6.5, carbonate hardness of 3 or lower, and a nitrate level between 10-50mg/l. Additionally, a high level of carbon dioxide (25-40mg/l) and proper nutrient levels are essential for the plant's optimal growth.

Aquascaping & Usage

This plant can be used for midground planting in aquariums, offering a unique and natural aesthetic. When planted in substrate, E. fluctuans develops a root system and can be propagated by cutting and replanting the upper stem portion. It lends itself well to creating a "wild" natural aquarium layout, especially when combined with other suitable aquatic plants.

Propagation

Propagation of E. fluctuans is achievable through fragmenting the plant or using cuttings. Trimming the stems carefully promotes the growth of lateral shoots, resulting in a bushier appearance. However, caution is advised due to the plant's brittle stems.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat of Brazil and Venezuela, Eleocharis fluctuans forms clumps that float on the water's surface. Despite its natural state as a floating plant, it can also be planted in the substrate, allowing for a diverse range of aquascape designs in aquariums.
