General Description
Eriocaulon cinereum, belonging to the Eriocaulon genus, is a small and slow-growing aquatic plant with a rosette growth pattern. It is part of the Eriocaulaceae family and is categorized under seed plants and flowering plants. This species is highly variable and can be found in rice paddies in South-East Asia, as well as in Africa, Asia, Australia, the southern USA, and northern Italy.
Aquarium Suitability
Eriocaulon cinereum is suitable for aquariums and has gained popularity in recent years as an aquarium plant. It requires specific care to thrive, including a nutrient-rich substrate for its large root system, high lighting intensity, CO2 fertilization, and regular nutrient supplementation. The plant stays relatively small, reaching a maximal height of about 8 cm, making it ideal for foreground placement in tanks.
Demands and Hardiness
This aquatic plant falls under medium difficulty in terms of care requirements. It necessitates high levels of carbon dioxide (25-40mg/l), a pH range of 4.5-7, carbonate hardness from 0-7, and temperatures between 18-30°C. Additionally, it thrives in high lighting conditions and requires nitrate (10-50mg/l), phosphate (0.1-3mg/l), iron (0.01-0.5mg/l), and potassium (5-30mg/l) supplements.
Aquascaping & Usage
Eriocaulon cinereum is commonly used in midground and foreground areas of aquariums, particularly in nano tanks. Its unique appearance, resembling tiny green sea urchins, makes it suitable for accentuating various aquascape layouts. In Eastern Asia, it is often utilized in Tonina tanks to enhance the visual appeal of aquarium setups.
Propagation
Propagation of Eriocaulon cinereum can be done by unearthing the plant approximately once a month and carefully separating the parent and daughter plants by cutting the connection point with a sharp tool. The plant can also reproduce through seeds and splitting.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat, Eriocaulon cinereum grows emersed in very wet ground, primarily in rice paddies of South-East Asia. It is also widespread in Africa, Asia, and Australia, with introduced populations in the southern USA and northern Italy. Due to its adaptability and aesthetic appeal, this species has become a favored choice for aquarists looking to enhance their underwater landscapes.
