General Description

Parrot's feather, scientifically known as Myriophyllum aquaticum, is an aquatic plant that originates from South America but has spread to various warm-temperate regions globally. It thrives by forming extensive populations in water, with long trailing shoots that often emerge above the waterline. This species is characterized by its blue-green, finely-structured emersed leaves that repel water.

Aquarium Suitability

Parrot's feather, also known as Myriophyllum aquaticum, is suitable for aquariums as it is easy to care for and grows rapidly. It can be utilized in various ways in the aquarium, serving as a background, midground, or surface plant, making it a versatile option for aquascaping (see table).

Demands and Hardiness

This aquatic plant thrives in medium to high lighting conditions and prefers a pH range of 5 to 7.5. It can tolerate temperatures between 15-25°C and shows resilience to colder temperatures as well. Parrot's feather requires carbon dioxide levels between 15-40mg/l and moderate levels of nutrients such as nitrate, phosphate, and potassium to flourish (see table).

Aquascaping & Usage

Due to its fine-leaved nature and fast growth, Parrot's feather is ideal for creating intricate aquascapes in aquariums. It can be used to add texture and depth to the tank, particularly in the Dutch style or street aquascaping. Additionally, its ability to grow across the water surface makes it a unique and attractive choice for aquatic setups.

Propagation

This plant can be easily propagated through cuttings, making it convenient for aquarists to expand their Parrot's feather population in the aquarium. By trimming and replanting the cuttings, enthusiasts can encourage the growth of new shoots and maintain the desired look of the plant in the tank.

Habitat and Distribution

Parrot's feather, a member of the Haloragaceae family, thrives in aquatic environments and can be found in various water bodies across tropical and warm-temperate regions. Initially native to South America, it has been introduced to different parts of the world, where it forms dense populations and displays its characteristic trailing growth habit.
