General Description

The Santa Catarina milfoil, scientifically known as Myriophyllum aquaticum var. santacatarinense, is a localized form of Myriophyllum aquaticum hailing from the state of Santa Catarina in southeastern Brazil. This particular variant exhibits lower cultivation demands compared to the standard form of M. aquaticum and distinguishes itself through its lighter green leaves with fewer pinnae. Under ample light, the foliage may take on a reddish-brown tint. In contrast to the standard form, the Santa Catarina milfoil shows less tendency to grow out of the water and features smaller emersed sprouts. Resembling the growth pattern of Myriophyllum mattogrossense, this newer plant is not widely commercially available but can be obtained from fellow hobbyists.

Aquarium Suitability

The Santa Catarina milfoil is deemed suitable for aquariums, offering a unique aesthetic and ease of maintenance. However, due to its rarity in commercial availability, aquarists may have more success acquiring it through other hobbyists.

Demands and Hardiness

With a classification of very easy in terms of difficulty, this aquatic plant demonstrates very fast growth. Though details on its winter hardiness remain unknown, its water conditions preference include a temperature range of 15-25°C, medium to high light levels, and a pH of 5-8. It thrives in environments with carbon dioxide levels ranging from 10-40mg/l and nitrate concentrations from 10-50mg/l.

Aquascaping & Usage

Santa Catarina milfoil, with its fine-leaved nature, suits backgrounds and midgrounds within an aquarium setup. Additionally, it can lend itself well to Street or Dutch-style aquascaping designs.

Propagation

Propagation of the Santa Catarina milfoil primarily occurs through cuttings, making it relatively straightforward for aquarists to multiply and establish within their tanks.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, the Santa Catarina milfoil is found in Santa Catarina, specifically near Rio Canoas close to Ponte Alta do Sul in southern Brazil. This plant belongs to the family Haloragaceae and falls under the order Saxifragales within the major group of seed plants, specifically flowering plants (Angiosperms).
