General Description

Myriophyllum mattogrossense, commonly known as Matogrosso milfoil, is a tropical aquatic plant originating from the lowlands of South America. This species, introduced to the aquarium hobby in 1990, is distinguished by its vibrant green coloration, fine leaves, and bushy growth pattern.

Aquarium Suitability

Highly suitable for aquariums, M. mattogrossense is an easy-to-cultivate plant that thrives in medium-lit tanks without the need for CO2 injection. It requires at least medium light intensity to develop healthy, robust leaf whorls, making it ideal for beginners or hobbyists seeking low-maintenance aquatic plants.

Demands and Hardiness

With a preference for medium to high light levels (0.5 watts per liter or above), this fast-growing plant can adapt to a wide range of water parameters, including a temperature range of 23-25°C and pH levels between 5-7.5. It is relatively undemanding in terms of nutrients, primarily requiring moderate levels of nitrates (NO3) and phosphates (PO4) for optimal growth.

Aquascaping & Usage

Although underutilized in Nature Aquaria or Dutch-style tanks, M. mattogrossense offers great potential as a background or filler plant due to its finely structured leaves and lush green color. Its fine-leaved, well-branched appearance makes it an excellent choice for creating bushy aquatic landscapes, adding visual interest and depth to aquarium setups.

Propagation

Propagation of M. mattogrossense is straightforward, primarily through cuttings. Lateral shoots can be easily trimmed and replanted into the substrate to establish new growth. Regular pruning is recommended to control its vigorous growth, ensuring a tidy and well-maintained appearance in the aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, Myriophyllum mattogrossense is found in regions of Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. The aquarium population originates from Ecuador, near Coca. This species typically inhabits tropical lowland aquatic habitats, where it thrives in warm waters with abundant light, showcasing its adaptability to various environmental conditions.
