General Description
Myriophyllum mezianum, also known as milfoil, is a relatively new aquaristics species found in the eastern region of Madagascar. It thrives near the seashore on the banks and inundation areas of the Ambodimanga river, where it grows both emersed and submersed in shallow waters of up to around 1 meter. This delicate stem plant is characterized by finely feathered light green leaves, with reddish-tinted shoot tips, making it the smallest known Myriophyllum species in the hobby.
Aquarium Suitability
This species is compatible for aquarium use, particularly in nano tanks, as a midground or foreground plant when grouped together.
Demands and Hardiness
Myriophyllum mezianum is moderately difficult to cultivate in aquariums, requiring very soft water, intense lighting, CO2 injection, and good nutrient supply. It is recommended to maintain temperatures above 25°C for optimal growth. Refer to the table for specific water condition requirements.
Aquascaping & Usage
Best suited as a midground plant, Myriophyllum mezianum enhances aquascapes with its fine-leaved appearance, adding texture and depth to the arrangement.
Propagation
Propagation of M. mezianum is achieved through cuttings, allowing for the growth and spread of this aquatic plant within the aquarium environment.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat in Madagascar, Myriophyllum mezianum thrives in aquatic environments around the Ambodimanga river, growing both emersed and submersed in shallow waters.
