General Description
Myriophyllum pinnatum, also known as Myriophyllum hippuroides in the aquaristic trade, is a fast-growing aquatic plant originating from the eastern United States. It thrives in shallow waters, mud, and marshy areas along the edges of lakes and ponds, displaying green-red stems and finely pinnate green leaves that grow alternately with very short distances between nodes, resulting in dense foliage.
Aquarium Suitability
This plant is considered suitable for aquariums, offering a fast growth rate and is often utilized as a background or midground plant due to its fine-leaved nature.
Demands and Hardiness
The plant's requirements include medium to high light, a pH range between 6 to 7.5, and a temperature range of 20-25°C. M. pinnatum can tolerate temperatures between 4-27°C and somewhat colder conditions if necessary.
Aquascaping & Usage
With its fine-leaved structure and growth habit, M. pinnatum contributes to intricate aquascaping layouts, adding depth and texture to the underwater environment.
Propagation
Propagation of Myriophyllum pinnatum is commonly achieved through cuttings, making it relatively straightforward to reproduce and expand its presence in an aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat, M. pinnatum is found predominantly in the eastern part of the United States, thriving in various aquatic environments such as lakes, ponds, and marshy woods where it adds to the biodiversity of these regions.
