General Description
Myriophyllum simulans, commonly known as Amphibious Water-milfoil, is a species belonging to the family Haloragaceae. Originating from eastern Australia, this aquatic plant is found growing in a variety of water bodies and marshes, forming dense populations in emersed form. The plant was initially mistakenly identified as Myriophyllum propinquum before being correctly classified as M. simulans by A.E. Orchard in 1986. The emersed form is distinguished by needle-like-lineal leaves growing in whorls on thick stems, while the submersed form features finely pinnate light green leaves on thinner stems.
Aquarium Suitability
Amphibious Water-milfoil is considered suitable for aquariums, with a medium level of difficulty. It is occasionally available commercially for enthusiasts looking to incorporate this unique plant into their aquatic setup. This plant grows at a fast rate and can be used in the background, midground, or in the "Street" Dutch aquascaping style.
Demands and Hardiness
Amphibious Water-milfoil thrives in medium to high light conditions with a temperature range of 20-28°C. It requires carbon dioxide levels of 15-40mg/l, a pH range of 5-7.5, and moderate levels of nutrients including nitrate (10-50mg/l) and phosphate (0.1-3mg/l). The plant can tolerate temperatures as low as 4°C but caution is advised in colder environments.
Aquascaping & Usage
In aquascaping, Myriophyllum simulans is favored for its fine-leaved appearance, adding a delicate texture to the aquarium layout. Due to its fast growth, it is suitable for providing background or midground coverage, enhancing the visual appeal of the tank. Additionally, it can be utilized in the popular Dutch aquascaping style known as "Street."
