General Description
Myriophyllum tetrandrum, commonly known as red milfoil, is a species widely distributed in the Asian tropics. It is closely related to M. tuberculatum and was introduced to aquariums in 2008 after being discovered in a small lake in south Thailand. This aquatic plant belongs to the Haloragaceae family and is classified under the Saxifragales order within the major group of flowering plants (Angiosperms).
Aquarium Suitability
Myriophyllum tetrandrum is considered suitable for aquariums, but it is rarely available commercially for purchase. Its fine-leaved structure makes it ideal for background or midground placement in aquariums. The plant requires a medium level of difficulty to care for, making it more suitable for experienced aquarists.
Demands and Hardiness
The red milfoil thrives in aquariums with specific water conditions. It requires a temperature range of 26-32°C and can tolerate temperatures between 18-34°C. Additionally, it needs medium to high light, 15-40mg/l of CO2, a pH range of 5-7, and nitrate levels between 10-50mg/l. It prefers low to moderate carbonate hardness, 0-8, and phosphates between 0.1-3mg/l. Potassium levels should be maintained between 5-30mg/l, with iron concentrations between 0.01-0.5mg/l.
Aquascaping & Usage
Myriophyllum tetrandrum is a fine-leaved plant that adds texture and depth to aquascapes. Due to its medium growth rate, it can fill in background or midground areas of the aquarium. However, its rarity in the commercial market may limit its availability for aquascaping purposes.
Propagation
Propagation of Myriophyllum tetrandrum is mainly achieved through cuttings. These cuttings can be re-planted in the substrate of the aquarium to encourage new growth and expansion of the plant within the aquatic environment.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat, Myriophyllum tetrandrum is found in the Asian tropics, particularly in areas like south Thailand. The plant was initially discovered in a small lake near Krabi city. Its distribution in the wild emphasizes its preference for tropical climates and aquatic habitats.
