General Description
Lagarosiphon madagascariensis, commonly known as Lagarosiphon, is a fast-growing aquatic plant originating from Madagascar. This plant, favored by aquascaper Takashi Amano for Nature Aquarium layouts, features thin, almost transparent dark green leaves. Under optimal conditions, Lagarosiphon can become invasive in a tank due to its rapid growth rate and tendency to produce lateral runners.
Aquarium Suitability
Lagarosiphon madagascariensis is suitable for aquariums, requiring warm, soft water rich in CO2 and high-intensity lighting of around 0.75 watts per liter or above. It thrives in a nutrient-rich environment with adequate levels of macro- and micronutrients. Maintaining specific nutrient levels such as NO3 (5-15 mg/l) and PO4 (1-2 mg/l) is crucial for its vibrant green color and healthy growth.
Demands and Hardiness
Lagarosiphon has medium care requirements and a very fast growth rate. It is not suitable for outdoor use in colder climates. The plant thrives in temperatures between 24-28°C and has a tolerance range of 18-30°C. Moderate carbonate hardness (2-10 dKH) and iron levels (0.01-0.5 mg/l) are necessary for its optimal growth.
Aquascaping & Usage
Due to its filigree growth habit and bushy form, Lagarosiphon is ideal for the background or midground of small aquaria, where it can be easily maintained and controlled. Its delicate appearance and almost transparent leaves make it a valuable addition to various aquarium layouts.
Propagation
Propagation of Lagarosiphon madagascariensis is commonly done through cuttings. The plant regularly produces lateral runners that can be trimmed and replanted to encourage new growth. Regular and intensive trimming is necessary to maintain its desired bushy form and prevent irregular growth patterns.
Habitat and Distribution
Lagarosiphon madagascariensis is native to the waters of Madagascar. It typically thrives in nutrient-rich aquatic habitats with warm temperatures. In the wild, Lagarosiphon can be found in freshwater environments where it can quickly establish itself and spread through its rapid growth and propagation mechanisms.
