General Description

Lagarosiphon major, commonly known as Curly waterweed, is an aquatic plant that grows exclusively submerged, floating, or rooted in stagnant cool waters. Originally from southern Africa, this plant thrives in cooler climate zones and has been introduced to Western Europe and New Zealand. It is characterized by its hard leaves with a pronounced downward bend, differentiating it from similar-looking species like Brazilian waterweed (Egeria densa).

Aquarium Suitability

L. major is considered suitable for aquariums, especially those that cater to cool-water inhabitants like goldfish or white cloud mountain minnows. While it has been somewhat overshadowed by other more attractive species, its unique transparent downbent leaves make it a beautiful background plant. It is relatively easy to care for and can grow exceptionally fast once introduced to the tank.

Demands and Hardiness

For optimal growth, L. major requires medium lighting and cooler water temperatures ranging from 18-24°C. It has a fast growth rate, particularly in soft water, but can adapt to harder water conditions without issues. If exposed to high temperatures for an extended period, the plant may decay rapidly. It can be planted in the substrate or left floating in the aquarium and is recommended for setups with temperatures between 20-23°C.

Aquascaping & Usage

Lagarosiphon major can be used in aquascaping as a background plant, adding a unique touch with its distinctive foliage. It can create a lush underwater environment, especially in tanks designed to replicate natural cool-water habitats.

Propagation

Propagation of L. major is relatively straightforward and can be achieved through cuttings of lateral or top shoots. By fragmenting the plant and replanting the cuttings, aquarists can encourage new growth and expand the presence of Curly waterweed in the aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, Lagarosiphon major is commonly found in southern Africa in cool, stagnant waters. The plant has spread to other regions like Western Europe and New Zealand due to its adaptability to different water conditions. It is known to tolerate colder temperatures, making it suitable for a variety of aquatic environments.
