General Description

Limnobium laevigatum, commonly known as Amazon frogbit, is a floating plant resembling large duckweed. Native to lakes, ponds, and slow-flowing rivers in Central and South America, it is more adaptable to various temperatures compared to other frogbit species. The growth habit involves the formation of runners with young plants at their ends, quickly creating carpets in calm-water zones of an aquarium. Under suitable conditions, emersed leaves may develop above the waterline, and the plant may even flower, though infrequently.

Aquarium Suitability

Amazon frogbit is generally considered suitable for aquariums and is commonly available commercially. It is an easy-to-maintain plant that propagates automatically, rapidly increasing its quantity in the tank. Despite concerns about shading and long vertical roots, the plant's features can be incorporated into aquarium design to create interesting light and shade contrasts, with the roots adding a decorative touch.

Demands and Hardiness

Amazon frogbit has a very fast growth rate and thrives in medium to high light levels. It benefits from CO2 injection and good fertilization, with high air humidity promoting emersed leaf formation. The plant's tolerance to temperature ranges from 4-35°C, and it can adapt to pH levels between 5-8.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquarium setups, Amazon frogbit serves as a water surface plant, contributing aesthetically to the overall design with its floating rosettes and elegant roots. While it may lead to shading of the aquarium floor, this characteristic can be utilized creatively to enhance the layout with contrasting light patterns.

Propagation

Propagation of Amazon frogbit occurs through fragmentation and the growth of runners. Optimal conditions facilitate the rapid spread of the plant within the aquarium, allowing for the establishment of a sizable population in a short period.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in natural habitats such as lakes, ponds, and slow-flowing rivers throughout Central and South America, Limnobium laevigatum thrives in these freshwater environments. Its adaptability to various temperature ranges and relative ease of maintenance make it a popular choice among aquarists.
