General Description
Ottelia mesenterium is an aquatic plant belonging to the Hydrocharitaceae family. Endemic to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, it is specifically found in lakes Matano, Towuti, and Mahalona within the Malili Lake System. This plant is characterized by its strikingly undulated leaves and has garnered attention in the aquarium trade due to its aesthetic appeal.
Aquarium Suitability
Despite being imported to Europe as early as 1974, Ottelia mesenterium is not a recommended aquarium plant. Attempts at cultivating it have largely been unsuccessful, possibly due to its specialized and highly adapted nature to the conditions of its natural habitat in the Malili Lake System. It is crucial to note that this species cannot be considered aquarium-compatible, as replicating its native environment in captivity remains a challenge (see table for specific water conditions).
Demands and Hardiness

While Ottelia mesenterium presents an attractive rosette growth pattern with undulate leaves, its limited success in aquarium settings restricts its potential for aquascaping purposes.
