General Description

Vallisneria nana, commonly known as Vallisneria "Tiger," is a species of aquatic plant belonging to the family Hydrocharitaceae. It is a fast-growing plant that forms rosettes with a height ranging from 30 to 60cm. The plant is predominately referred to as Vallisneria nana but is also known by the misapplied names Vallisneria spiralis "Tiger" and Vallisneria spiralis "Striped."

Aquarium Suitability

It is well-suited for aquariums and is frequently available commercially. With very easy care requirements, it can thrive in a medium-high light environment, with a temperature range between 24-29°C. The plant thrives in carbon dioxide levels of 10-40mg/l and prefers a pH range of 6-8. Additionally, it has a tolerance for temperatures between 15-30°C.

Demands and Hardiness

Vallisneria nana has specific water condition requirements, including carbonate hardness of 2-21, iron levels between 0.01-0.5mg/l, nitrate levels of 10-50mg/l, phosphate levels of 0.1-3mg/l, and potassium levels between 5-30mg/l. It is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates, as it is not winter-hardy.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquascaping, Vallisneria nana can be used to create depth and structure in the aquarium due to its tall, grass-like appearance. It serves as an excellent background or midground plant, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the tank.

Propagation

This plant propagates through runners, quickly spreading and filling in the surrounding space in the aquarium. By producing new plants connected to the parent through horizontal stems, it can easily carpet an area within the tank.

Habitat and Distribution

Vallisneria nana is commonly found in aquatic habitats with still or slow-moving freshwater. It is distributed across various regions, where it thrives in favorable conditions, contributing to the ecosystem by providing shelter and oxygen for aquatic life.
