General Description

Vallisneria nana, commonly known as Narrow Leaf Eelgrass, is a species of aquatic plant that originates from North Australia. It is a relatively new addition to the aquarium hobby and is characterized by its light green ribbon-shaped rosulate leaves. In the wild, it reaches heights of around 15 cm, but in aquariums, it can grow up to 70 cm if not regularly trimmed. This plant is a contrast plant suitable for both middle and background placement in tanks.

Aquarium Suitability

Vallisneria nana is considered suitable for aquariums and falls under the category of easy plants to care for. It thrives in medium to high light conditions, with an ideal range starting at 0.4 watts/liter. Regular fertilization with liquid iron and the injection of CO2 are recommended for optimal growth. The plant is known to reproduce readily once its minimal demands in terms of lighting and nutrients are met.

Aquascaping & Usage

Vallisneria nana is commonly used as a background or midground plant in aquariums due to its tall growth potential and contrasting appearance. As it forms dense curtains through the production of runners, it can cover the entire back of a tank, providing a lush green backdrop for the aquatic environment.

Propagation

The propagation of Vallisneria nana occurs through the formation of runners. These runners give rise to new plants, allowing for the easy expansion of Vallisneria nana within the aquarium setup.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, Vallisneria nana is found in North Australia. It grows submerged in aquatic environments, typically reaching heights of around 15 cm. Although its distribution is limited to certain regions, it has gained popularity in the aquarium trade due to its ease of care and visually appealing attributes.
