General Description

Calliergonella cuspidata, also known as Acrocladium cuspidatum, is a globally spread moss found in temperate climates. It thrives in nutrient-rich, moist-wet environments such as wet meadows, marshes, ditches, and on the edges of water bodies. This moss forms yellowish-green to light green cushions or mats with relatively stiff, creeping-upright shoots.

Aquarium Suitability

While not commonly available commercially, Calliergonella cuspidata is suitable for aquariums. It is a fast grower under submersed cultivation and can be used in coldwater or warmwater tanks. This moss benefits from strong lighting and a good supply of macronutrients and CO2.

Demands and Hardiness

Calliergonella cuspidata is an undemanding moss that thrives under strong lighting conditions. It grows best with an ample supply of macronutrients and CO2. This moss is suitable for coldwater as well as normal warmwater tanks, though its performance in temperatures above 26°C still requires verification. It releases oxygen bubbles during the day and is easy to establish in various aquatic setups.

Aquascaping & Usage

Ideal for midground and foreground placement, Calliergonella cuspidata lends a natural touch to aquatic environments. It can be utilized in paludariums and Wabi Kusa layouts, establishing itself along wet garden pond edges or in bog gardens. Its light green mat-like structures enhance the transitional area between water and land parts, creating a visually appealing aquatic landscape.

Propagation

Propagation of Calliergonella cuspidata can be achieved through splitting and cutting off daughter plants. This moss can be bound to rocks or driftwood using fishing line, although it does not develop rhizoids for underground attachment.

Habitat and Distribution

Calliergonella cuspidata is commonly found in sunny-semi-shaded areas rich in nutrients and bases. Its distribution includes wet meadows, marshes, ditches, and waterbody edges in Central Europe. This moss also grows as a "weed moss" in garden and park lawns, especially on compacted, waterlogged soil.
