General Description

"Flame moss," a species of the Taxiphyllum genus, is native to East or South-East Asia and is characterized by its distinctive growth pattern of sparsely ramifying shoots that grow in upright spirals underwater, resembling flames. This unique trait has contributed to its rapid rise in popularity within the aquarium hobbyist community.

Aquarium Suitability

With a classification of "easy" in terms of difficulty, flame moss is suitable for aquariums and is commonly available in trade. It is categorized under the family Hypnaceae and major group Mosses (Bryophyta), making it an attractive choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.

Demands and Hardiness

The flame moss has a slow growth rate and can thrive in a wide range of water conditions, including a pH value of 5-8, carbon dioxide levels between 10-40mg/l, and a temperature range of 12-34°C. Its adaptability to varying light levels (low-high) and nutrient concentrations (nitrate 10-50mg/l, phosphate 0.1-3mg/l, potassium 5-30mg/l, iron 0.01-0.5mg/l) make it a versatile addition to aquarium setups (see table).

Aquascaping & Usage

Primarily utilized as an epiphyte, flame moss is often seen growing on hardscape elements like driftwood in nano tanks. Its unique appearance lends itself well to aquascaping designs, where it can be attached to branches or thin pieces of driftwood to create striking visual effects in the underwater environment.

Propagation

Flame moss can be easily propagated through splitting or by cutting off daughter plants, making it a low-maintenance option for aquarists looking to expand its presence within their aquariums.

Habitat and Distribution

While specific details about the exact habitat and distribution range of Taxiphyllum sp. "Flame Moss" remain limited, it is found in regions of East or South-East Asia, where it thrives in aquatic environments conducive to its growth requirements.
