General Description
Taxiphyllum taxirameum, also known as Khao Sok Moss, is a recently discovered aquatic plant initially found in a rivulet near Khao Sok National Park in Thailand. Identified and introduced as a new aquarium moss by bryologist Prof. Benito C. Tan and Jens Kuehne, this moss species has a widespread distribution across North, Central, and South America, as well as Asia. While it was found growing partially submersed in Thailand, it is typically a terrestrial moss that thrives in shaded areas on soil, silicate rocks, and limestone.
Aquarium Suitability
With a classification of "very easy" in terms of difficulty, T. taxirameum is highly suitable for aquariums. This moss proves to be undemanding and a fast grower, attaching itself swiftly to driftwood and rocks through its rhizoids. It can thrive in environments with a wide range of lighting conditions, making it versatile for various tank setups.
Demands and Hardiness
Taxiphyllum taxirameum is classified as a medium-growing plant that can thrive in temperatures ranging from 12-34°C. It tolerates a pH range of 5-8 and a wide variation in lighting, from low to high levels. Additionally, it requires carbon dioxide levels between 10-40mg/l and can adapt to different levels of carbonate hardness, nitrate, iron, phosphate, and potassium concentrations.
Aquascaping & Usage
Commonly utilized as an epiphyte on hardscape features, T. taxirameum is also suitable for nano tanks and serves as a plant for spawning activities. Its moderate growth rate and ability to attach easily to decor make it a popular choice for aquascaping projects.
Propagation
Propagation of Taxiphyllum taxirameum is achieved through splitting and cutting off daughter plants. This method allows for the rapid expansion of the moss within the aquarium environment.
