General Description

"Weeping Moss," scientifically known as Vesicularia ferriei, is a species of moss categorized under the family Hypnaceae. Originating from China and also found in the southern regions of Japan, this moss displays a creeping growth habit in its natural habitat. The submersed form of Vesicularia ferriei features distinctive overhanging frond-shaped shoots resembling a weeping willow. Its leaves, with relatively broad leaf cells, set it apart from similar species like V. montagnei.

Aquarium Suitability

Vesicularia ferriei, commonly known as "Weeping Moss," is a suitable plant for aquariums, making it a popular choice among hobbyists and aquascapers in Asia and Europe. With relatively undemanding needs in terms of lighting and fertilization, it adapts well to aquarium environments. However, true weeping moss can be challenging to source due to various other moss species being marketed under the same name.

Demands and Hardiness

With a slow growth rate, Vesicularia ferriei thrives in a range of water conditions. It can tolerate low to high light levels, a pH range of 5-7, and a temperature range of 15-30°C. The moss may require a carbon dioxide concentration of 20-40 mg/l and nutrients like nitrate, phosphate, and potassium within specific limits. Its ability to grow as an epiphyte on hardscape makes it ideal for nano tanks.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquascaping, Weeping Moss adds an elegant touch with its weeping growth pattern, creating a unique aesthetic in aquarium landscapes. Its epiphytic nature allows for versatile usage on driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape elements. This moss species complements small aquarium setups and nano tanks, contributing to a lush and visually appealing aquatic environment.

Propagation

Propagation of Vesicularia ferriei, or Weeping Moss, can be achieved through splitting or cutting off daughter plants. This straightforward method enables aquarium enthusiasts to expand their moss population and enhance the greenery in their aquatic displays.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, Vesicularia ferriei thrives on wet rocks with sandy soil, moist riverbanks, and wet soil along rivulets. Its distribution spans from China to the southern regions of Japan. The moss exhibits a distinctive growth habit with downward-bent shoots, setting it apart from other Vesicularia species like V. montagnei.
