General Description

Pogostemon yatabeanus, also known as Dysophylla yatabeana, is a large stem plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Native to East and Southeast China, Korea, and Japan, this aquatic plant is not widely known in the aquarium hobby but is gaining popularity in the USA. It closely resembles Pogostemon stellatus "Broad Leaf" in growth habit and size, with its light green leaves maintaining their hue even under intense lighting.

Aquarium Suitability

Considered suitable for aquariums, Pogostemon yatabeanus thrives in large tanks where it can stand out against plants like Pogostemon stellatus "Broad Leaf" and Limnophila aromatica. Although it may be rare in Europe, this species can grow rapidly with strong lighting, CO2 injection, and regular fertilization.

Demands and Hardiness

With a medium difficulty level, Pogostemon yatabeanus prefers medium to high lighting levels and thrives in temperatures ranging from 15-30°C. It requires iron levels between 0.01-0.5mg/l, nitrate levels of 10-50mg/l, phosphate levels between 0.1-3mg/l, and potassium levels of 5-30mg/l for optimal growth.

Aquascaping & Usage

Ideal for aquascaping, Pogostemon yatabeanus adds a vibrant contrast to large tanks, especially when paired with plants of different colors. Its fast growth rate under suitable conditions makes it a desirable choice for aquarists looking to create lush aquatic landscapes.

Propagation

Propagation of Pogostemon yatabeanus can be easily achieved through cuttings, making it a convenient option for aquarists looking to expand their plant population within the aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, Pogostemon yatabeanus is found in regions of East and Southeast China, including Anhui, Guizhou, Hunan, and Zhejiang, as well as in Korea and Japan. Despite its limited availability commercially and from other aquarists, this plant continues to attract attention for its unique characteristics and vivid appearance in aquatic settings.
