General Description
Utricularia vulgaris, commonly known as common bladderwort, is an aquatic carnivorous plant native to Europe, Northern Africa, and temperate climate zones in Asia. This underwater plant forms long rootless stems beneath the water surface of ponds and pools. Its intricate "leaves" are adorned with numerous bladder traps and, in the summer, produce flower stalks that rise above the waterline, bearing small yellow flowers reminiscent of snapdragons.
Aquarium Suitability
The Utricularia vulgaris is highly suitable for aquariums, with its fast growth rate and ability to thrive in medium to high light conditions.
Demands and Hardiness
See table for specific requirements regarding water conditions. This plant is known to tolerate colder temperatures, making it a hardy choice for various types of aquarium setups.
Aquascaping & Usage
Utricularia vulgaris can be used in the background or on the water surface of aquariums, adding a unique and striking element to aquascaping designs.
Propagation
The common bladderwort can be propagated through fragmentation, cuttings, splitting, and cutting off daughter plants, making it relatively easy to increase the plant population in an aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution
This species is found not only in Europe, Northern Africa, and parts of Asia but also in Central Europe, African and Asian tropics, as well as Australia and New Zealand. It is also possibly cultivated in aquariums worldwide, sometimes mistaken for similar Utricularia species such as U. australis and U. macrorhiza.
