General Description

Lindernia dubia, also known as Gratiola dubia, is an aquatic plant originating from the eastern United States, where it grows in shallow waters as part of pioneer plant vegetation on muddy ground. It has been introduced to other regions by human activities and can also be found in parts of Central Europe. This annual plant is unique among Lindernia species for its substantial size and visual impact, making it an ideal accent plant for the foreground and middle ground in aquariums.

Aquarium Suitability

L. dubia is considered suitable for aquariums, especially in "high tech" setups with intense lighting, elevated CO2 levels, and controlled fertilization. Its steady yet slow growth, upright shoots, and deep green coloration make it a versatile choice for various aquascape layouts. It thrives in full sun conditions, similar to its natural habitat on pond edges and in shallow water.

Demands and Hardiness

According to its medium difficulty level, Lindernia dubia requires moderate to high light levels, nitrate concentrations between 10-50mg/l, phosphates between 0.1-3mg/l, potassium levels of 5-30mg/l, and iron concentrations ranging from 0.01-0.5mg/l for optimal growth. It is relatively resilient to nutrient deficiencies and prefers "high tech" planted tanks for healthy development.

Aquascaping & Usage

Ideal for background and midground placement, L. dubia offers an alternative to other common plants such as Bacopa caroliniana. Its size and growth pattern make it suitable for various aquascape styles, including Dutch-style aquariums. When incorporating L. dubia into an aquascape, consider its need for ample sunlight and space to thrive.

Propagation

Propagation of Lindernia dubia can be achieved through seeds or cuttings, allowing aquarists to expand their plant population within the aquarium. By following proper propagation techniques, enthusiasts can create a lush and vibrant aquatic environment with this unique plant species.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat in North America, Lindernia dubia can be occasionally mistaken for Gratiola species like G. virginiana and G. neglecta due to similar appearances. However, key differentiators include L. dubia's square stem cross-section and pale purple flowers, in contrast to the white flowers of Gratiola species. Despite its scarcity in some years, L. dubia can be found in abundance during others, showcasing its adaptable nature in varying environmental conditions.
