General Description
Micranthemum umbrosum, commonly known as Shade mudflower, is a fast-growing aquatic plant belonging to the Linderniaceae family. It is native to several southeastern states in the US, from Texas to Virginia, where it thrives in various aquatic environments such as ponds, ditches, and rivulets. In some regions, it transitions from emersed growth in summer to submersed growth in winter. This plant is also found in parts of Central and South America.

Aquarium Suitability
Micranthemum umbrosum is suitable for aquariums, particularly in aquascapes where strong lighting is provided. Although it may initially struggle to adapt to a new environment, once acclimated, it is not very demanding. Adequate lighting of at least 0.5 watts per liter is essential for optimal growth. While additional CO2 injection is not necessary, it can enhance the growth rate significantly.

Demands and Hardiness
M. umbrosum thrives in water with medium to high lighting levels, a pH range of 5-7, and a temperature between 22-24°C. It requires moderate levels of nitrates, phosphates, and potassium, as well as a carbon dioxide concentration of 20-40mg/l. The plant can tolerate temperatures between 4-26°C but its winter hardiness is unknown.

Aquascaping & Usage
In aquariums, Micranthemum umbrosum is commonly placed in the midground or background due to its well-branched bushy growth pattern. With extremely strong lighting, it may grow in a creeping manner, making it suitable for the foreground as well. This plant is ideal for nano tanks and can be utilized in groups to create dense plant mats through frequent trimming.

Propagation
Propagation of M. umbrosum is relatively easy and can be done through cuttings or by splitting and planting daughter plants. By cutting off a main shoot and replanting it in the substrate, new roots develop quickly, leading to the formation of independent plants. The plant produces numerous lateral shoots, which can be encouraged through trimming to create dense vegetation.

Habitat and Distribution
Found in various aquatic habitats in the southeastern USA, Central, and South America, Micranthemum umbrosum exhibits a versatile growth pattern, adapting to seasonal changes by transitioning between emersed and submersed growth. Its presence in ponds and rivulets highlights its preference for water-rich environments.
