General Description

Ammannia crassicaulis, commonly known as Nesaea crassicaulis in the aquarium trade, is an aquatic plant that can grow up to 50 cm in height. It is native to swamps, rice paddies, and rivulets in the African and Madagascan tropics. This plant is often mistaken for Ammannia gracilis due to their similarities in appearance. In aquariums, N. crassicaulis displays less intense red hues compared to A. gracilis and tends to exhibit a yellowish-green to pale red coloration.

Aquarium Suitability

Ammannia crassicaulis is deemed suitable for aquariums, making it a viable option for aquarists looking to incorporate vibrant accents into their tank setup. The plant is characterized by fast growth and is commonly utilized for background, midground, and accentuating purposes, particularly in Dutch-style aquascapes.

Demands and Hardiness

This plant thrives in high light conditions and requires a carbon dioxide (CO2) level ranging between 20-40mg/l. It can tolerate a pH range of 5-7 and a temperature range of 22-28°C. Additionally, A. crassicaulis has a high demand for nitrate (NO3-) with levels between 10-50mg/l and phosphate (PO43-) levels of 0.1-3mg/l.

Aquascaping & Usage

Ammannia crassicaulis is often used in aquascaping for its vivid colors, making it an ideal choice for creating captivating accents within the aquarium. It is suitable for adding visual interest as an accent plant or for filling in background and midground spaces to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the aquascape.

Propagation

Propagation of Ammannia crassicaulis is commonly achieved through cuttings. By carefully trimming and replanting the cuttings, aquarists can promote the growth and spread of this species within the aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, Ammannia crassicaulis thrives in the marshy environments of African and Madagascan tropics, including swamps, rice paddies, and rivulets. It is a versatile plant that can adapt to various aquatic conditions, contributing to its widespread distribution in these regions.
