General Description

Nesaea pedicellata, also known as Ammannia pedicellata, is a true African plant commonly found in temporary puddles and bogs. With a pale coloration, this plant features long light green leaves sprouting from orange-light red stems, resembling Ammania leaves, hence one of its vernacular names is "yellow Ammania." It has been available to aquarium hobbyists since 1980 and is recognized for its attractive appearance.

Aquarium Suitability

Suitable for aquariums, N. pedicellata thrives well under medium light conditions and does not insist on a nutrient-rich substrate. Regular fertilization with micro and macronutrients is highly recommended, especially to prevent deficiencies such as nitrate. While not mandatory, CO2 injection is advisable for promoting denser growth and shorter internodes, enhancing its overall bushier look. This species is generally suitable for midground and background placement in larger tanks of 190 liters and above.

Demands and Hardiness

The plant is considered difficult to maintain in aquarium setups according to the demands table. It is recommended to maintain carbon dioxide levels between 20-40mg/l, carbonate hardness between 2-12, and a pH value ranging from 5-7. Additionally, the water temperature should be maintained between 22-28°C, with a tolerance range of 15-31°C.

Aquascaping & Usage

Due to its inconspicuous coloring and large size, N. pedicellata serves as an ideal plant for subtle aquascaping layouts. Commonly used in the background, midground, and Street (Dutch style) aquascapes, its aesthetic appeal adds a touch of elegance to aquatic environments.

Propagation

Propagation of N. pedicellata is easily achieved through cuttings of top or lateral shoots. These cuttings, when replanted, may exhibit slow growth initially but can be expedited with regular nutrient supplementation.

Habitat and Distribution

This plant species is native to Africa, where it is found in temporary puddles and bogs. Its natural habitat provides insights into the care requirements that can be replicated in aquarium settings to ensure its well-being.
