General Description

Cuphea anagalloidea A.St.-Hil., previously known as Rotala sp. "Araguaia," is a distinctive aquatic plant originating from Brazil. Belonging to the genus Cuphea within the family Lythraceae, this species is one of the few aquatic Cuphea plants. It features small demanding stems that grow 1.5-2 cm wide, showcasing vibrant red leaves with green spots under strong lighting conditions.

Aquarium Suitability

Suitable for aquariums, Cuphea anagalloidea is a peculiar addition to aquascapes. Although there isn't extensive information available regarding its specific aquarium requirements, it is categorized as a difficult plant to maintain. With a medium growth rate and the potential for emersed growth, it is recommended for nano tanks, midground placement, and as a colorful accent plant for vibrant aquascapes.

Demands and Hardiness

As per the documented values, Cuphea anagalloidea thrives in high light conditions with a temperature range of 20-26°C. It requires a moderate level of carbon dioxide (20-40 mg/L), nitrate levels between 10-50 mg/L, and phosphates between 0.1-3 mg/L. The plant's growth may benefit from a potassium level of 5-30 mg/L and minimal carbonate hardness up to 7 dKH.

Aquascaping & Usage

With its striking red coloration, Cuphea anagalloidea serves as an eye-catching accent plant suitable for freshwater aquascapes. Its adaptability for use in Dutch-style aquascaping, foreground planting, and group settings allows for versatile incorporation into various tank layouts.

Propagation

Cuphea anagalloidea can be propagated through top and lateral cuttings, typical for stem plants. This method enables aquarists to expand their plant population and maintain the desired aesthetic within the aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to various regions in Brazil, including Pará, Tocantins, Bahia, Goiás, and Minas Gerais, Cuphea anagalloidea is native to the South American country. Originating from likely the Rio Araguaia in East Brazil, this plant showcases the diversity of aquatic flora found in the tropical and subtropical regions.
