General Description
The plant known as Rotala mexicana 'Goiás' in the aquarium hobby is part of the Rotala genus within the Lythraceae family. Initially labeled as Rotala sp. 'Goiás', it was later correctly identified as Rotala mexicana. It is a highly variable species with a creeping, submersed growth habit that can also develop dense, upright populations.
Aquarium Suitability
This plant is suitable for aquariums and is classified as having medium difficulty in terms of care. It is rarely commercially available but can sometimes be sourced from other aquarists. With a fast growth rate, Rotala mexicana 'Goiás' thrives in nano tanks and is well-suited for the foreground, either as a group or as ground cover.
Demands and Hardiness
For optimal growth, Rotala mexicana 'Goiás' requires high light levels and a temperature range between 22-28°C, with a tolerance between 18-30°C. It thrives in a carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration of 25-40mg/l and prefers nitrate (NO3-) levels between 10-50mg/l. The plant can adapt to a pH range of 4.5-7 and low to moderate levels of carbonate hardness, phosphate, and potassium.
Aquascaping & Usage
In aquascaping, Rotala mexicana 'Goiás' is ideal for creating lush foreground layouts or adding texture to nano tanks. Its creeping stem and rhizome structure make it suitable for use as both a carpeting plant and a midground accent. When grown in dense populations, it can serve as a striking focal point.
Propagation
Propagation of Rotala mexicana 'Goiás' is easily achieved through runners and cuttings. By separating healthy portions of the plant and replanting them, aquarists can stimulate new growth and expand their populations of this species.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the Brazilian state of Goiás, Rotala mexicana 'Goiás' thrives in tropical freshwater environments. Its specific habitat within Goiás includes areas where it can exhibit its characteristic creeping growth behavior and form dense populations.
