General Description

Rotala ramosior, commonly known as Lowland Rotala, is the sole species of Rotala native to the USA, with two related species, R. rotundifolia and R. indica, being introduced from Asia. This aquatic plant is found in wetlands across North America, thriving both emersed and submersed, with its habitat range extending as far north as Ontario. In aquaria, it is prized for its large size and unique growth habit, making it a noteworthy addition to any tank.

Aquarium Suitability

Rotala ramosior is seldom commercially available due to its rarity in the trade market. Hobbyists in the USA have successfully maintained this plant in aquarium settings, but it remains a niche species with limited availability. Despite being easy to care for, it requires specific conditions such as ample light, CO2, and iron levels to thrive. The plant's emersed form transitions well to submersed growth, although its growth rate slows in the latter state.

Demands and Hardiness

The Rotala ramosior has medium care requirements and is best suited for aquarists with some experience in maintaining aquatic plants. It thrives in high light conditions and requires a CO2 level of 25-40mg/l, along with adequate iron levels. The plant is adaptable to a temperature range of 22-28°C and a pH range of 4.5-7. Regular trimming and maintenance are necessary for optimal growth in aquariums.

Aquascaping & Usage

This plant is ideal for the background or midground of an aquarium, where its lush green foliage contrasts beautifully with red or fine-leaved plants. A group of stems, preferably an odd number, can create a visually striking focal point in the tank. Rotala ramosior adds a subtle beauty to aquascapes with its attractive growth pattern and can enhance the overall aesthetic of the aquarium.

Propagation

Propagation of Rotala ramosior is primarily done through cuttings of lateral shoots. While this method is effective, the plant's slow growth rate means patience is required for achieving a dense population in the aquarium. However, the ability to propagate the plant through cuttings ensures its longevity and availability within the tank.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, Rotala ramosior is found in full sun in wetlands across North America, from the USA to parts of Canada. It adapts well to both emersed and submersed environments, displaying robust growth under the right conditions. Although it is not commonly traded outside the USA, variations like Rotala sp. 'Sunset' or Ammannia sp. 'Sulawesi' are sometimes available, showcasing similar characteristics to the North American species.
