General Description

The Rotala rotundifolia "H'Ra" ("Gia Lai"), also known as Rotala sp. "Gia Lai", is a fast-growing stem plant belonging to the Lythraceae family. Originating from the central highlands of Vietnam, this plant closely resembles Rotala rotundifolia "Colorata" but exhibits a more orange hue and narrower leaves when grown in similar conditions. Its growth habit is overhanging or horizontal, setting it apart from Rotala rotundifolia "Green", which has a light green coloration.

Aquarium Suitability

Considered an easy plant to cultivate, this species is suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. With a fast growth rate and a height ranging from 20-80cm, it is often utilized in the background or midground of aquascapes for its vibrant colors and ability to accentuate the overall design. It requires medium to high light levels and thrives within a temperature range of 22-28°C.

Demands and Hardiness

The Rotala rotundifolia "H'Ra" ("Gia Lai") plant has moderate requirements when it comes to water conditions, including a pH range of 4.5-7.5, moderate to high carbon dioxide levels (20-40mg/l), and nitrate levels between 10-50mg/l. It can tolerate temperatures from 4-32°C and a potassium concentration of 5-30mg/l. Although its winter hardiness is unknown, it can be cultivated both indoors and outdoors.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquascaping, this plant serves as a colorful accent due to its orange tones and narrow leaves. Its overhanging growth habit adds depth to the aquarium layout, creating a dynamic and visually appealing underwater landscape. When placed strategically in the background or midground, it enhances the overall aesthetic of the aquatic environment.

Propagation

Propagation of the Rotala rotundifolia "H'Ra" ("Gia Lai") plant is primarily achieved through cuttings. By trimming and replanting these cuttings in the substrate, aquarists can encourage new growth and maintain a healthy population of this striking aquatic species.

Habitat and Distribution

Originally found in H'Ra in the Gia Lai province of Vietnam, this plant thrives in freshwater habitats with suitable lighting and nutrient levels. While it is occasionally available from commercial sources, it is also exchanged among aquarists due to its appeal and ease of cultivation.
