General Description
Rotala sp. "Nanjenshan" is a delicate aquatic plant with fine, narrow leaves that grow in whorls of a light green-reddish color. The stem is green, and the plant may develop small flowers with light purple petals in its leaf axils.
Aquarium Suitability
Rotala sp. "Nanjenshan" is considered suitable for aquariums, especially in small tanks. It is well-established in aquaristics and relatively easy to acquire in trade. The plant prefers soft water rich in CO2, with ample iron and unhindered light to maintain its intense reddish coloration.
Demands and Hardiness
With a medium difficulty level, Rotala sp. "Nanjenshan" has a fast growth rate and can thrive in medium-high light conditions. It prefers water temperature between 22-28°C and can tolerate a pH range of 4.5-7.5. While it can withstand somewhat colder temperatures, caution should be taken in extreme conditions.
Aquascaping & Usage
This fine-leaved plant is suitable for the midground in aquascaping layouts. Its growing shoot tips may develop an overhang, adding an interesting design feature to aquariums. Trimming back the plant can promote more compact growth, making it a versatile addition to aquascape designs.
Propagation
Rotala sp. "Nanjenshan" can be propagated through cuttings, allowing for the easy expansion of its presence in aquarium setups.
Habitat and Distribution
Originating from Taiwan, Rotala sp. "Nanjenshan" was initially introduced near Nanjenshan by Dennerle. The plant has a creeping emersed growth habit with elliptic-lanceolate leaves. Its distribution is limited, with its natural habitat confined to specific locations in Taiwan.
