General Description
Rotala sp. 'Vietnam' is a plant species introduced by the Japanese company Rayon Vert to the aquarium hobby. Its exact classification remains unidentified, but it is native to environments with shallow waters and wet ground. In its submersed form, it bears a resemblance to Rotala hippuris, but its exact taxonomic placement is still under scrutiny.
Aquarium Suitability
Suitable for aquariums, Rotala sp. 'Vietnam' exhibits a fast growth rate under the right conditions. Moderate to high lighting is essential for maintaining its overall green appearance with red stems, while intense light can induce a striking golden coloration. Carbon dioxide injection is necessary for optimal growth, and a phosphate content of 1-2 mg/l promotes thicker stems, reduced internode length, and a reddish hue. Adequate iron and micronutrient levels are also crucial to prevent issues like weak stems and leaf browning.
Demands and Hardiness
The demands of Rotala sp. 'Vietnam' are comparable to those of Rotala wallichii, requiring a temperature range of 22-28°C and a pH of 4.5-7. It thrives in water with a carbon dioxide level of 20-40 mg/l, nitrate concentration of 10-50 mg/l, and phosphate levels ranging from 0.1-3 mg/l. A moderate to high lighting intensity is recommended for its growth, and a potassium level of 5-30 mg/l supports its development.
Aquascaping & Usage
Ideal for placement in the middle to background of aquarium layouts, Rotala sp. 'Vietnam' complements scapes dominated by stem plants. It serves as an attractive contrast to both red and green species, adding visual interest with its unique appearance. When allowed to grow along the water surface, this species exhibits vertical growth and produces lateral shoots abundantly.
Propagation
Propagation of Rotala sp. 'Vietnam' is carried out through stem cuttings, similar to other stem plants. By taking cuttings from the top or lateral shoots and replanting them in the substrate, aquarists can expand their Rotala sp. 'Vietnam' population easily within the aquarium environment.
Habitat and Distribution
Naturally occurring in habitats with shallow waters and moist soil, the specific distribution of Rotala sp. 'Vietnam' remains closely tied to its native region. The plant thrives in these environments, showcasing its adaptability to varying levels of water depth and ground moisture.
