General Description

Water clover, belonging to the Marsilea genus, are aquatic ferns characterized by their unique four-leaf clover-like appearance. There are over 40 species in this genus, with popular varieties including M. crenata and M. hirsuta. These plants are undemanding and thrive under moderate light with a regular nutrient supply.

Aquarium Suitability

Water clovers are frequently available commercially and are popular in the aquarium hobby. They are suitable for midground, nano tanks, and as foreground or ground cover plants. They require medium-high lighting and a temperature range of 20-26°C.

Demands and Hardiness

Water clovers are relatively easy to care for, needing moderate light and a regular nutrient supply. They can benefit from CO2 injection and stronger lighting for more compact growth. They propagate easily through rhizome division and cutting off daughter plants.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquascaping, water clovers can form a small-leaved carpet, making them ideal for creating a lush foreground. They can be used to add texture and depth to the substrate, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the aquarium.

Propagation

Propagation of water clovers is straightforward, involving the division of rhizomes or the cutting off of daughter plants. New rhizomes and leaves will form where these plant parts are replanted in the substrate.

Habitat and Distribution

Marsilea species can be found worldwide, growing in shallow water and moist locations across Europe, Asia, Africa, America, and Australia. These plants can adapt to various environments and are commonly cultivated in aquariums, garden ponds, and outdoor containers.
