General Description
Mayaca fluviatilis, commonly known as stream bogmoss, is a finely-structured mosslike stem plant belonging to the Mayacaceae family. It is native to subtropical and tropical regions of the Americas, ranging from the southeastern United States to Argentina. This plant is versatile, able to grow both emersed and submersed, often found along the banks of blackwater rivulets. There are various forms of M. fluviatilis, each with slightly different characteristics.
Aquarium Suitability
Mayaca fluviatilis is suitable for aquariums and is a great indicator plant for iron levels, showing signs of deficiency through fading shoot tips. It thrives in soft water with an acidic pH but can also adapt to harder water conditions. This plant requires a well-balanced nutrient supply, sufficient CO2, and good lighting for optimal growth.
Demands and Hardiness
M. fluviatilis has medium difficulty levels for cultivation in aquariums. It prefers medium to high light levels, with a temperature range of 23-25°C and a tolerance range of 18-30°C. Carbon dioxide levels should be maintained between 25-40mg/L, with a pH range of 4.5-7. Additionally, it requires low to moderate levels of nitrate, phosphate, iron, and potassium.
Aquascaping & Usage
Mayaca fluviatilis is suitable for backgrounds, midgrounds, and nano tanks in aquascaping due to its fine-leaved structure and fast growth rate. It adds a delicate and natural aesthetic to aquascapes, enhancing the visual appeal.
Propagation
Propagation of Mayaca fluviatilis is typically done through cuttings. By taking stem cuttings and replanting them in suitable conditions, the plant can be easily multiplied to propagate and fill out an aquarium or aquascape.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat, Mayaca fluviatilis is commonly found along the edges of blackwater rivulets in subtropical and tropical regions of the Americas. Its distribution ranges from the southeastern United States to Argentina, showcasing its adaptability to various climates within this range.
