General Description
The aquatic plant Aciotis acuminifólia belongs to the genus Aciotis, which is part of the Melastomataceae family. It is one of approximately 14 species within the genus. This plant, which is native to tropical South America, particularly in the South-American tropics, is recognized by its strictly upright growth and four-edged stems that bear crosswise opposite leaves exhibiting parallel leaf veins, typical of the Melastomataceae family. The submersed leaves of A. acuminifolia display varying hues of green, yellow, or reddish tones, with a red underside, where a higher light intensity can intensify the reddish coloration.
Aquarium Suitability
Aciotis acuminifolia is considered suitable for aquariums, requiring soft water, ample nutrient supply, moderate to high light, and a good source of carbon dioxide (20-40mg/l of CO2). In case of insufficient light or placement in a shaded area, the plant may exhibit stunted growth, leaf loss, or even plant decomposition. This species has a moderate growth rate under optimal conditions and produces lateral shoots that can be propagated by cutting and replanting into the substrate.
Demands and Hardiness
Aciotis acuminifolia is classified as a difficult plant to maintain in an aquarium setup. It thrives best in environments with a pH range of 5-7, nitrate levels between 10-50mg/l, and phosphate concentrations of 0.1-3mg/l. Additionally, it requires a temperature range of 18-30°C and a carbonate hardness of 0-7 dKH. The plant is not classified as winter-hardy and is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates.
Aquascaping & Usage
Aciotis acuminifolia serves as a vibrant accent plant with its crimson and reddish coloration, making it suitable for midground placement within aquascapes. Its slow growth rate and compact form (10-40cm in height and 7-8cm in width) make it ideal for detailed aquascaping designs that require colorful focal points.
Propagation
Propagation of A. acuminifolia is typically accomplished through cuttings. By trimming lateral shoots or the upper part of the stem, the plant can generate new growth and spread within the aquarium. The plant develops a strong and wide-spreading root system over time, aiding in its anchorage and nutrient uptake.
Habitat and Distribution
The cultivated Aciotis acuminifolia likely originates from Rio Sao Francisco in eastern Brazil. In its natural habitat, this species is widespread throughout tropical South America, contributing to the ecologically diverse plant life in the region.
