General Description
Monosolenium tenerum, a member of the Liverworts family, is a dark green aquatic plant originating from warm-temperate-subtropic regions of northern India, Nepal, Eastern Asia, and Hawaii. This species, often mistaken for suesswassertang, boasts a robust appearance reminiscent of Riccia fluitans but distinguishes itself by anchoring to the substrate rather than floating.
Aquarium Suitability
This liverwort species, introduced to aquariums in 2002, is deemed easy to cultivate, adapting well to various conditions. Optimal growth is achieved under bright lighting, additional CO2 supplementation, moderate temperatures, and sufficient phosphate levels. Propagation entails simply dividing the cushions, but caution is advised as unanchored growth may lead to potential pest issues.
Demands and Hardiness
Monosolenium tenerum thrives in moderate to high light conditions with a recommended CO2 level of 15-40mg/l. It prefers a pH range of 5-7.5 and a temperature between 18-26°C. Additionally, maintaining nitrate levels between 10-50mg/l, phosphate levels between 0.1-3mg/l, and potassium levels between 5-30mg/l is vital for its well-being.
Aquascaping & Usage
This liverwort is versatile in aquascaping, commonly used in nano tanks and as a foreground or group plant. Its dark green hue contrasts beautifully with lighter foreground plants like Eleocharis parvula and Glossostigma elatinoides. When employed as a surface-covering plant, it is recommended for larger aquariums to prevent overgrowth issues.
Propagation
Propagation of Monosolenium tenerum is easily accomplished through splitting and cutting off daughter plants. To manage growth, tying it to rocks using a nylon line or integrating it among other aquatic plants is advisable. Trimming regularly helps maintain its desired appearance and prevents overgrowth.
Habitat and Distribution
In nature, Monosolenium tenerum thrives in nitrogen-rich, shaded areas with moist soil in its native regions. While it may be rare in the wild, it can be frequently found in settlements. Its emersed form grows well on wet substrates and is suitable for moist terrariums, artificial water trickles, and waterfalls, providing a versatile option for various aquatic setups.
