General Description:The Nymphaea nouchali, also known as the "star lotus" or "red and blue water lily," is a water lily species native to South and South-East Asia-Australia. Widely spread in tropical regions like India and Mauritius, it is recognized as the national flower of Sri Lanka, where it is referred to as "Manel." This species is highly variable, exhibiting populations with differently-colored flowers and known hybrids with closely related water lily species like N. caerulea and N. capensis.
Aquarium Suitability: Considered suitable for aquariums, Nymphaea nouchali sprouts submersed leaves resembling those of Nymphaea minuta from Madagascar. Under proper aquarium conditions, it may produce fragrant flowers around 7 cm in diameter with narrow white petals displaying a blue-red hue towards the petal rim. The flowers typically bloom during the day, attracting interest in aquatic setups.
Demands and Hardiness:Nymphaea nouchali is categorized as an easy plant to care for with fast growth. It thrives in medium to high light conditions and requires a temperature range between 24-28°C. Its tolerance for temperature spans 18-30°C, with a preference for a pH range of 5-8. Adequate levels of carbon dioxide, nitrate, phosphate, iron, and potassium contribute to its healthy growth, making it a suitable choice for aquarists.
Aquascaping & Usage:Nymphaea nouchali serves well as a background or midground plant, adding a distinctive visual appeal to aquarium layouts. Its striking flowers and lush green foliage contribute to creating a natural and vibrant aquatic environment, enhancing the overall aesthetics of the tank.
Propagation:The propagation of Nymphaea nouchali is primarily achieved through seeds. By following proper techniques and providing suitable conditions, aquarists can encourage the growth and spread of this water lily species within their aquariums.
Habitat and Distribution:The plant is a local form of Nymphaea nouchali from Sri Lanka, with its overall distribution spanning tropical Asia, including regions from India and Mauritius to Australia. Embracing its cultural significance as the national flower of Sri Lanka, Nymphaea nouchali embodies both aesthetic beauty and botanical diversity in aquatic ecosystems.
