General Description

Ludwigia brevipes, commonly known as Long Beach primrose-willow, is a narrow-leaved aquatic plant originating from the southeastern United States. Belonging to the Ludwigia genus in the Onagraceae family, this plant is often confused with Ludwigia arcuata in its submersed form due to similar appearances. It is distinguished by its smaller, narrower petals and hairless stems.

Aquarium Suitability

Ludwigia brevipes is suitable for aquariums and is classified as an easy plant to care for. It grows quickly when provided with sufficient light (0.5 watts per liter or above) and benefits from the addition of micro- and macronutrients, especially with injected CO2. Low nitrate levels and relatively high phosphate readings contribute to a reddish or orange coloration of the shoot tips.

Demands and Hardiness

According to its demands, Ludwigia brevipes thrives in medium to high light conditions and requires a temperature range of 22-26°C. Additionally, it prefers a pH range of 4.5-7 and moderate to high levels of carbon dioxide (20-40mg/l). The plant's winter hardiness is not specified, but it has a temperature tolerance range of 12-28°C.

Aquascaping & Usage

A well-branched and bushy plant, Ludwigia brevipes adds vibrant colors to aquariums, making it suitable for accents in the midground or nano tanks. When planted in groups, it complements other plant species with its reddish finely structured leaves, such as Micranthemum umbrosum and Bacopa australis.

Propagation

Propagation of Ludwigia brevipes is straightforward and can be achieved through cuttings. Simply remove lateral shoots or shoot tips and replant them in the substrate to encourage new growth.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, Ludwigia brevipes is found in boggy areas along the Atlantic coast of the southeastern USA, specifically in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and northwestern Florida. It thrives in coastal plains, adding to the biodiversity of the region.
