General Description
Ludwigia helminthorrhiza, also known as Ludwígía helminthorrhíza, is a flowering plant within the genus Ludwigia and the family Onagraceae. It is native to the American tropics, found from southern Mexico to Paraguay. This species typically grows as a floating plant with long stems in the shallow areas of various water bodies. It can also be found emersed, where its stems may lignify slightly. One remarkable feature of this plant is its densely-growing, sometimes reddish floating leaves and distinctive white, spongelike, spindle-shaped breathing roots, known as pneumatophores, which inspired its scientific name due to their worm-like appearance. In favorable conditions, Ludwigia helminthorrhiza produces flowers with five white petals tinged with yellow at their bases.
