General Description

Ludwigia x lacustris, commonly known as Lake Ludwigia, is a rare natural hybrid of L. brevipes and L. palustris. It is predominantly found in the eastern and southeastern regions of the United States. Notably, some of the areas where L. x lacustris thrives are beyond the typical distribution range of its parent species, L. brevipes, which is primarily concentrated in the southeastern states of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Aquarium Suitability

This plant is classified as an easy addition to aquariums and is suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Its availability commercially and through aquarists is limited, contributing to its rarity in the aquarium trade.

Demands and Hardiness

Ludwigia x lacustris thrives in environments with medium to high lighting, with a temperature range between 22-26°C (72-79°F). It can tolerate temperatures from 4-30°C (39-86°F) and requires a pH level between 5-8. Carbon dioxide levels between 10-40mg/l and nitrate concentrations of 10-50mg/l support its growth. These specific water conditions are recommended for successfully maintaining this plant in an aquarium (see table).

Aquascaping & Usage

This narrow-leaved Ludwigia plant is suitable for aquascaping backgrounds and midground placements. Its well-branched and bushy growth pattern adds depth and dimension to aquatic landscapes, enhancing the overall visual appeal of aquariums.

Propagation

Propagation of Ludwigia x lacustris is achieved through cuttings, making it relatively straightforward for aquarists to propagate and expand their plant collection.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat along the eastern coast of the United States from Rhode Island to Georgia, Ludwigia x lacustris is found in scattered locations. It exhibits vigorous growth in its native environment and can occasionally outcompete its parent species in these regions.
