General Description

Bacopa australis, also known as Southern Bacopa, is a relatively new addition to the aquarium hobby. This South-American plant exhibits bushy growth with intensely shaded light green leaves, sometimes turning reddish under strong light. It is a fast-growing stem plant that thrives in freshwater tanks without the need for extensive care.

Aquarium Suitability

With a difficulty level rated as very easy, Bacopa australis is frequently commercially available and suitable for most planted freshwater tanks. It can adapt to a wide range of water conditions and temperatures, making it a versatile choice for aquarists of all levels.

Demands and Hardiness

The plant requires medium to high light intensity for optimal growth, but it can also thrive under medium light conditions. Although not mandatory, adding fertilizers and CO2 can enhance its growth and coloration. B. australis can tolerate cooler temperatures below 20°C, but it can also survive in warmer waters up to 32°C.

Aquascaping & Usage

In an aquarium, Bacopa australis can be placed in the foreground or middleground, contrasting beautifully with other plants. Its well-branched, bushy appearance makes it ideal for backgrounds, midgrounds, and even as a group. It can also be used in small tanks as a background plant. Trimming the plant with scissors is recommended to prevent overly dense growth.

Propagation

Propagation of Bacopa australis is straightforward and can be achieved through cuttings. New plants typically grow quickly once planted, allowing for easy expansion and maintenance within the aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution

This plant is native to Southern South America, specifically South Brazil and Northern Argentina. It is found in rivers and lakeshores in regions like Bonito, Brazil. The natural habitats of B. australis are not extensively documented, but it is known to thrive in clear, calcareous waters. In its emersed form, it can form low-growing carpets with pale blue flowers under suitable conditions.
