General Description
Bacopa salzmannii, a member of the Plantaginaceae family, is a versatile aquatic plant found from the southern regions of Mexico to Paraguay. It typically grows semi-emersed along pond edges and slow-flowing rivulets. The species exhibits variability, with several groups now classified within it that were originally considered distinct species.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for aquariums, Bacopa salzmannii is recognized for its ease of propagation and medium difficulty level in care. Although not commercially abundant, this plant is known in the USA but remains less available in trade in Europe.
Demands and Hardiness
Bacopa salzmannii requires medium to high light levels and a consistent supply of micronutrients for optimal growth. Carbon dioxide injection can be beneficial but is not mandatory. Water conditions, such as pH levels ranging from 5 to 7.5 and a temperature tolerance of 15-30°C, should be maintained within specified ranges (see table).
Aquascaping & Usage
Popularly utilized in aquariums for backgrounds, midgrounds, and in Dutch-style street layouts, Bacopa salzmannii adds aesthetic appeal with its purple flowers. Its growth rate is fast, making it favorable for creating lush aquatic environments.
Propagation
Propagation of Bacopa salzmannii is relatively straightforward, as the plant readily produces lateral shoots both after trimming and spontaneously. Cuttings can be taken to propagate new plants with ease.
Habitat and Distribution
Originally likely from Brazil, specifically the Rio Araguaia region, Bacopa salzmannii is distributed across Central and South America, spanning countries like Honduras, Brazil, Peru, and Paraguay. Notably, this species thrives in emersed cultivation and displays thick brown stems with densely hirsute texture.
Note: Details such as specific requirements and propagation methods can be referenced in the provided table.
