General Description

Limnophila aromatica, commonly mistaken as L. hippuridoides in the aquarium hobby, is a plant with variable appearances, ranging from green forms to reddish hues. Its leaves contain essential oils, giving off an aromatic scent reminiscent of citrus or curry when crushed. This species is native to tropical and subtropical Asia and northern Australia, thriving in swampy areas, shallow waters, and flooded rice paddies.

Aquarium Suitability

With a medium difficulty level, L. aromatica requires high light intensity, CO2 fertilization, and a nutrient-rich environment for optimal growth. Similar to L. hippuridoides, this plant needs a good supply of nitrate, phosphate, and micronutrients, along with a suitable substrate. Its emersed cultivation is successful in wet, nutrient-rich soil with ample light and humidity.

Demands and Hardiness

The aquarium setup for Limnophila aromatica includes maintaining high light levels, carbon dioxide levels between 20-40 mg/l, and a pH range of 6-7.5. It thrives in temperatures of 22-27°C and tolerates a range from 15-30°C. Additionally, the plant requires a moderate level of carbonate hardness, iron, nitrate, phosphate, and potassium for healthy growth.

Aquascaping & Usage

Limnophila aromatica is suitable for background and midground placement in aquariums, adding a lush green backdrop to aquatic landscapes. Its fast growth rate makes it ideal for creating a dense and vibrant background, enhancing the visual appeal of the tank.

Propagation

Propagation of L. aromatica is commonly done through cuttings. Once established, this plant can be easily multiplied by snipping off healthy stems and replanting them in the substrate. Regular pruning promotes bushier growth and prevents overcrowding in the aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution

Found across a wide range, Limnophila aromatica is native to various regions in Asia, including Northeast India, Bhutan, Southeast Asia, South China, Japan, Korea, and Australia. Its natural habitat includes wetlands, shallow waters, and flooded rice paddies, where it thrives as a versatile and resilient aquatic plant.
