General Description
Limnophila hippuridoides, also known as Limnophila aromatica or Limnophila aromaticoides in the trade, is a marshweed native to the Malayan peninsula. Belonging to the Plantaginaceae family, this plant is closely related to Limnophila aromatica and Limnophila aromaticoides, differing mainly in flower and fruit characteristics. It is characterized by having 6-8 leaves per stem node with a reddish to intensively dark red color, emitting a distinct aromatic scent when crushed.
Aquarium Suitability
This aquatic plant, with its fast growth rate and vibrant coloration, is suitable for aquariums as an accent, background, or midground plant. It requires high light levels, carbon dioxide levels ranging from 20-40mg/l, and a temperature range of 22-27°C. It is not suitable for outdoor use in colder climates due to its unsuitability to winter conditions.
Demands and Hardiness
Limnophila hippuridoides thrives in aquarium setups with moderate to high levels of nitrate (10-50mg/l), phosphate (0.1-3mg/l), potassium (5-30mg/l), and carbonate hardness (2-12). Its winter hardiness limits its outdoor use in colder climates.
Aquascaping & Usage
With its intense reddish coloration, Limnophila hippuridoides is a visually striking choice for aquascaping, adding vibrant accents to an aquarium. Its bushy growth and coloration make it a desirable choice for creating colorful focal points in aquarium layouts.
Propagation
Propagation of Limnophila hippuridoides is primarily achieved through cuttings. By trimming and replanting stem cuttings, aquarists can encourage the plant to expand and establish new growth in the aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat in the Malayan peninsula, specifically Malakka, Limnophila hippuridoides thrives in marshy areas. Found in regions with warm temperatures, the plant benefits from the tropical climate of its native environment, where it can grow vigorously when provided with suitable conditions.
