General Description

Limnophila sessiliflora, also known as "Asian marshweed" or "Ambulia" in the USA, is a robust and adaptable aquatic plant native to South-East Asia. It thrives on the edges of stagnant waters, rivers, and rivulets. Commonly cultivated in aquatic nurseries, L. sessiliflora can be found in various regions outside its natural habitat, where it is considered an invasive aquatic weed.

Aquarium Suitability

With its easy maintenance and ability to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions, L. sessiliflora is highly suitable for aquariums. Its likeness to Cabomba species makes it a desirable plant due to its lower light requirements. In aquariums, it requires sufficient light (0.5 watts per litre) and CO2 injection for compact growth. Micronutrient fertilization and iron supplementation are essential for healthy development.

Demands and Hardiness

Limnophila sessiliflora is an undemanding plant that can thrive in pH levels ranging from 5.5 to 8 and temperatures between 22-28°C. It grows well in medium to high light conditions and requires a moderate amount of carbon dioxide (5-40mg/l). The plant's rapid growth necessitates regular trimming to maintain its health and shape.

Aquascaping & Usage

Due to its fine-leaved structure, L. sessiliflora is primarily used as a background plant in aquariums. In relatively low light conditions, it grows more compactly, making maintenance easier. Its fine-textured leaves create a striking contrast with other aquarium plants, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the tank.

Propagation

Propagating Limnophila sessiliflora is straightforward, typically done through stem cuttings. By trimming the top shoot and replanting it in the substrate, new lateral shoots develop, promoting growth and expansion within the aquarium. When cultivated emersed, L. sessiliflora may produce purple flowers along its stems.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, L. sessiliflora is commonly found in South-East Asia, growing along the banks of water bodies. This versatile plant has been introduced to various regions beyond its native range and poses a threat as an invasive species in some areas, such as the USA. Its adaptability and hardiness make it a popular choice among aquarists for creating lush and vibrant aquatic landscapes.
