General Description

Limnophila sp. 'Gigantea', a member of the Plantaginaceae family, is a fast-growing stem plant originating from South-East Asia. It is distinguishable by its light green leaves that lack a red tint, reaching comparable heights to L. aquatica.

Aquarium Suitability

This plant is rarely available commercially but well-established in hobbyist circles in the USA. With a medium level of difficulty in cultivation, it requires high light, CO2 fertilization, and regular addition of macronutrients to thrive. The plant may dissolve at the lower parts of stems under insufficient light conditions and needs clear water to prevent algal growth.

Demands and Hardiness

For optimal growth, Limnophila sp. 'Gigantea' requires a temperature range of 22-28°C, high lighting, and a pH level between 6.5-7.5. It also thrives in carbon dioxide levels of 10-40mg/l and phosphate levels of 0.1-3mg/l. Iron levels should be maintained between 0.01-0.5mg/l for vibrant colors.

Aquascaping & Usage

Best suited for medium to large aquariums, Limnophila sp. 'Gigantea' can be used as a background plant. Its fine-leaved structure makes it ideal for Dutch-style tank layouts, providing a striking contrast against other plants in terms of color and leaf structure.

Propagation

Propagation of Limnophila sp. 'Gigantea' is achieved through cuttings. Simply cut the top shoot and replant it in the substrate, or use lateral shoots for propagation. The plant's fast growth rate and runner-like lateral shoots make it easy to propagate and fill out aquarium backgrounds.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, Limnophila sp. 'Gigantea' can be found along the banks and edges of slow-flowing or stagnant waters in South-East Asia. While its cultivation in Europe remains uncertain, it thrives well in aquariums that replicate its native water conditions.
